Ask your Representative: Cosponsor H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act
In March, the House introduced a top-priority climate bill focused on keeping the US in the Paris Agreement and requiring a plan from the Trump Administration for the US to meet its international commitments under the agreement. With more than 70 percent of Americans supporting the agreement, this bill should have resounding, bipartisan support.
Send the message below to your Representative asking them to cosponsor H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act.
Dear your U.S. representative,
As your constituent, I ask you to cosponsor H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, to keep the United States in the Paris Agreement and require the Administration to produce a plan to meet our international commitments under that agreement.
Signed by 196 countries, including the United States, the Paris Agreement is the first truly global deal to fight the climate crisis. It has the support of over 70 percent of the American people, and more than 3,600 leaders from America's cities, states, tribes, businesses, colleges, universities, and faith organizations have publicly supported the Agreement by declaring "We Are Still In" and pledging their own actions to help the US meet its Paris commitments. Together, these leaders represent roughly half the US population and over half the US economy, coming from all 50 states. Americans across the country have made clear they want to our country to stay in Paris. Our representatives in Congress need to do the same.
Last year, an assessment by 13 federal agencies concluded that climate change is already being felt throughout the Unites States and that, without significant global action to mitigate and adapt to it, "rising temperatures, sea level rise, and changes in extreme events are expected to increasingly disrupt and damage critical infrastructure and property, labor productivity, and the vitality of our communities." Dozens of national security experts have also made clear that climate change is increasing the threats to the United States from around the globe. H.R. 9 is a simple, first step to require the Administration to continue working with the rest of the world to advance solutions to this growing challenge.
Climate change is a global problem, and it requires a global solution. It makes no sense for the United States to be the only country in the world that is not party to the Paris Agreement, which is our best hope to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. America needs to rejoin the world and do its part, and lawmakers from both sides of the aisle need to come together to make that clear. We have no time left to waste.
Please cosponsor H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, to reaffirm US leadership, protect the American people, and require the Administration to honor our commitments and take the threat of global climate change seriously.
