Tell Congress: Support the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act (H.R. 2238/S. 984)

Since the widespread use of plastic began in the 1950's, plastic pollution has accelerated and continues to plague our planet. More than 8.3 billion tons of plastic now exists. Plastic is found almost everywhere on our planet.

The Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act was introduced in the House and Senate with a plan to curb plastic pollution and hold all stakeholders accountable. Ask your Congressperson to cosponsor the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act and help recycle the materials we create today. Cosponsorship helps gather support for when the legislation goes to a vote. Not sure if your representative is a cosponsor already? Check the list of current cosponsors. [House] | [Senate]

Dear your U.S. representative, your U.S. senators,

I am writing to ask you to cosponsor (H.R. 2238/S. 984), the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act. This legislation was introduced by Representative Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) and Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) and will increase recycling and reuse rates in the US and mitigate the environmental impacts of plastic production and disposal. This act introduces national Extended Producer Responsibility programs to fix the broken feedback loops of our waste management and materials creation systems. Roughly 1 in 7 households do not have access to any recycling service and 77% of the public agree that too many products are made of plastic. This is a serious issue that must be resolved now.

The passing of this Act will promote a truly circular economy and protect vulnerable communities from further harm. The production and eventual leakage of plastic is a key issue to the public: 68% of Americans agree that companies that produce plastic waste need to help pay for the recycling system, and we must hold all stakeholders accountable for the plastic and packaging they create and manage.

Please cosponsor the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act and help protect nature, people, and the planet from the impacts of plastic pollution and waste. We must change the way consumers and producers rely on plastic and protect our planet.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
