Help Protect Our Oceans

Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a key driver of global overfishing. It threatens marine ecosystems, and puts food security at risk.

The Protecting Honest Fishermen Act of 2017, H.R. 3108, would require basic catch information regarding all species of seafood sold in the US, an important step in ending illegal fishing.

Tell your Representative to co-sponsor H.R. 3108, which would help protect honest fishermen and ensure healthy oceans.

Dear your U.S. representative:

I am writing today to ask you to co-sponsor H.R. 3108, the Protecting Honest Fishermen Act of 2017, and to push it through the legislative process.

Today, US dollars drive global illegal fishing. The US is the largest single country market for seafood imports, importing 90% of the seafood consumed. Of the wild caught imports, at least 1 in 5 are illegally caught, worth up to $2 billion a year.

This must not continue. International IUU fishing jeopardizes fisheries sustainability and food security. It is associated with major human rights violations and a host of illicit activities including human, weapon, and drug trafficking. And it creates unfair competition for US fishermen regulated under US law.

H.R. 3108 would break the link between the US market and international illegal fishing. It would require basic catch information as a condition of market access and allow the U.S government to refuse admission of seafood products not properly documented or in violation of US law.

I care about American jobs and the world's oceans, and I know that you do too. Co-sponsor H.R. 3108 today and actively work to ensure it becomes law.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
