Fresh water—water that is not saline—is vital to the survival of most living things. Marine life needs salty ocean water, but pretty much everything else (plants, animals, people) is absolutely dependent on fresh water.
Only 3% of all water on Earth is fresh water, yet freshwater systems—lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands, and aquifers—are home to more than 10% of all known animals and about 50% of all known fish species.
Unfortunately, climate change, infrastructure development, and population growth are putting freshwater systems increasingly at risk. More than half of the world’s wetlands have disappeared since 1900, and only a little more than one-third of the world's 246 longest rivers remain free-flowing. Consequently, freshwater species are declining faster than terrestrial or marine species.
That's why we launched the Freshwater Force—an opportunity for a passionate group of WWF supporters to come together and fight for the conservation of freshwater habitats. Can we count you in?
