Thank you for your interest in helping protect Brazil's forests. In December 2011, the Brazilian House of Representatives postponed its final vote on changes to the country’s Forest Code until March 2012.

More than 70,000 WWF supporters were part of a global outcry that contributed to their decision.

It's a great first success. But the challenge is not over.

While the Senate’s draft of the law addressed some of WWF’s concerns, it still includes provisions that do not support a sustainable future for Brazil’s forests, like amnesty to those who illegally deforested areas before July 2008.

If Brazil continues down this path, vast areas of tropical forest could be converted to land used for unsustainable cattle ranching and agriculture.

With the vote postponed, politicians and the public now have more time to analyze the implications of the changes to the law. This means WWF will continue to work to keep environmental issues on the agenda.

We'll be calling on WWF supporters in 2012 to help step up the pressure on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who still has the power to veto destructive elements of the proposed changes to the law.

Stay tuned.
