WWF's Species Step Challenge

Event Month: Saturday, October 1, 2022 to Monday, October 31, 2022

Registration Fee: $15

Participation Types: 5,000 steps a day | 10,000 steps a day

Fundraising: Fundraising is optional, but encouraged

Throughout the month of October, make a commitment to conservation and challenge yourself to take on either 5,000 or 10,000 steps a day and fundraise along the way to protect our planet’s magnificent species and their home.

This step challenge is about more than just logging steps each day. It’s about taking steps to protect all the places in the world we hold dear — not just for their beauty, but for all they provide. Many of these places face threats caused by human actions, from tearing down forests to poaching animals to emitting greenhouse gases. We must protect them now. We have a choice. Why would we risk losing the places we love?

Now is the time for us to nurture nature — to stop forest loss, protect our oceans and freshwater, and secure a future for people and wildlife. Nature needs our love. Don’t let it disappear. It’s our choice. Love it or lose it. Join us for WWF’s Species Step Challenge and together we can take action to create lasting solutions and protect the future of nature.

Upon registration, you'll receive a link to download MoveSpring, an app that will pair with your phone or fitness tracker and allow you to...

Travel along a map to virtually visit the different places that you’re fundraising to protect and learn more about WWF’s global conservation efforts. The more steps you take, the more places you’ll unlock!

Get outside and get moving to improve your physical and mental health — see how long of step streak you can keep!

Engage in a friendly competition with friends, family, or coworkers near and far with our real-time step leaderboard!

Track your progress using your preferred device (MoveSpring pairs with 90% of the wearable devices on the market).

And most importantly, fundraise to protect all species and their habitats-they need you now more than ever.

The more you raise for nature, the more gifts you'll receive as a thank you for your commitment to conservation. Fundraising prizes are available only to US residents at this time.

A step challenge is a challenge to take on a certain amount of steps every day. In this case, the challenge is to take on either 5,000 steps a day or 10,000 steps a day for the whole month of October.

You can track your steps through an app called MoveSpring that we will send you a link to download upon registration. You'll receive an email with a link and code to sign up for our challenge. The app will pull your step data from popular fitness tracking devices like Apple Health, Google Fit, Fitbit, Garmin, etc. Most phones use an accelerometer to measure steps and distance traveled so if you keep your phone with you, you don’t need to purchase a tracker or pedometer to participate.

There is no fundraising requirement to participate, but there is a one-time registration fee of $15 . Fundraising is encouraged and you can receive fundraising prizes when you fundraise.

A personal fundraising page is generated automatically for you during registration. You can use this page to fundraise for WWF and all of the donations that you personally raised for WWF will appear on your fundraising page. The funds you raise can qualify you to earn some exciting fundraising prizes!

For those of you participating on a team, each person on your team will have their own fundraising page to collect donations, and you'll also have a team page where the totals of everyone is added together. Donors can choose to donate to your personal page or to donate to the team fundraising page on behalf of the team.

Teammates can sign up for different step challenge distances, however the app experience will be slightly different for participants who choose 5,000 steps a day than those who choose 10,000 steps a day. Participants will only be able to chat with and view leaderboards in the app of people in the same challenge as them. If you would like to interact with team members in the app, we recommend all teammates sign up for the same step distance.
