Help me Raise money for our planet!

Hello friends and family!

Bobby here. I am 9 years old and in third grade. I am a kid but I want you to listen to me about my future and everybody’s future. I am concerned about climate change and what we are doing to our earth. We only have this earth right now and we need to take care of it.

In my travels I have seen many examples of drastic climate change.  For example when I was in Alaska I saw the glaciers and they were amazing and so beautiful.  We went on a train ride through the countryside and then to see many glaciers and valleys where glaciers once were.  During part of this train ride there were post up in front of the glacier to show where it had been 100 years ago, 50 years ago, and also in the last 20 years. In the last 20 the amount of melting of the glaciers is far worse than the past 100 years at this glacier site.   This is an example of our earth getting warmer and it can cause floods, rapid land loss and erosion of our shorelines.

Another example of erosion and our shorelines getting smaller is out in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. I go to OBX almost every single year since I was 5 months old. Every year we go back and the beach is smaller and shorter, and the houses are always getting closer or even falling into the water or they have to take them down or move them. The dunes there are also eroding from people stepping on them. Most people do not know that if you step on dunes you can hurt them and it will erode our shorelines quicker.  

When I was 7 we went to Mexico and one day we went to the beach. I don’t remember well what happened that day but my mom tells the story a lot because her and daddy laugh a lot about it. We got to this beautiful beach but it was littered with plastic and garbage. They had people there cleaning the beach constantly because of the constant flow of garbage. My mom trying to make the best of it swam with me and pushed the plastic out of the way while we played. My dad sat on the beach looking grossed out and refused to come into the water. At the time I had no idea why he was just sitting there. But looking back at the picture you can see the brown water and the filth in the water. I remember that day in a good way because my parents tried to make the best of it but looking back now it is terrible that we are not taking care of our earth.  The plastic and litter that you throw on the ground eventually goes into the ocean, killing or hurting the animal life.

Recently I was in Florida for vacation with my mom and dad and we noticed something on the horizon and I had no clue what it was at first. I thought it was maybe a boat but my mom and dad said the light was too bright and it stayed still.  I found out that those lights were oil rigs. We started to do some research about oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, and there are a ton. It got me very upset.  It makes me very upset because it can really hurt the marine life and ocean.

So these are some examples of what I have seen in my life and I am just 9 years old. Imagine what I will see in the future. I would like to see a clean planet with no hurt animals.  A clean planet looks like solar, wind, and water power. People using recyclable materials, re-using and remaking from things they already have.

So I need your help. I am taking part in FRIDAY’s For the Future.  Fridays For Future is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks, to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. She posted what she was doing on Instagram and Twitter and it soon went viral.

On the 8th of September, Greta decided to continue striking every Friday until the Swedish policies provided a safe pathway well under 2-degree C, i.e. in line with the Paris agreement.   This mostly takes place in Europe and in Canada but I found out about it and want to start protesting here in CT when I can. This movement is for kids to take back their future.

I am planning my first protest on May 3. I need your help.  You can help me in one or two ways. Let your child join my on Friday, May 3 at 12:30 PM to 2:30PM on the New Haven Green in front of town hall in New Haven, CT for a PEACEFUL protest for our future. We will make signs and be together to make a statement for our future. Message or call my mom if you want to join us. The more kids that show up the better chance we have to raise some awareness.  Spread the word to other school and communities! Go to Friday’s For the Future website and learn more, put up posters!

The second way you can help me is to help me raise money so I can donate it to the World Wildlife foundation. 

I am fundraising for World Wildlife Fund because I want to protect the future of nature.

Deforestation, climate change, water scarcity, and illegal wildlife trade. These are some of the threats facing our planet today—and no one person or group can tackle them alone. But if we work together, we can take on anything.

We can protect the very things that keep us alive: our forests, our oceans, our fresh water, our wildlife, our energy supply, our food supply.
