Here's a word that we all need to learn: Anthropocene. Its meaning is simple: the Anthropocene Epoch is an unofficial unit of geologic time, used to describe the most recent period in Earth's history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet's climate and ecosystems.
Sadly, almost all of it has been detrimental to our unique, amazing, and incredibly diverse wildlife and wild places. In the last 150 years, 23 species of animal have officially gone extinct. Unofficially, however, the number of extinct insects, plants, and animals could be much higher. Most of these extinctions have happened in the 20th and 21st centuries because of habitat loss, big game hunting, poachers, overfishing, climate change, pollution, the pet trade, and many other human activities. It's a sobering thought, but there's still hope.
